Ole Kirk Christiansen, who started his business in Billund in Denmark in 1932, made wooden toys and furniture. His business wasn’t very profitable and he struggled in the early 30s. In 1934, he started to focus on toys, and changed the name of the company to LEGO. It’s an abbreviation for “leg godt”, the Danish word for “play well”.

In the 1960s, the company began to expand to other Nordic countries. The company also developed smaller bricks that were ideal for small hands, and named it DUPLO in honor of the Latin word duplex (two-fold). This enabled children of all ages to construct more intricate models.

In the 1970s, Lego began to incorporate new features that helped its products stand apart from the other brands. They introduced different faces to the miniature figures. This made the figures look more realistic and enabled them to show different expressions and emotions. The Lego Group also added wheels to its bricks, opening the possibility of designing vehicles as well as other machines that move.

The company’s next step came when it introduced dedicated themes — systems within systems that allowed customers to build a particular world or scenario. This allowed the company to make its brand more well-known and also helped them reach an audience that was younger. Additionally the company increased its production by opening factories in South Korea, Malaysia, and Brazil.
